Picking a neighborhood in Marrakech is the single most important decision of your stay. A gorgeous riad in the wrong spot can ruin a weekend. A simple apartment in the right one will leave you with a great memory.

Medina — the historic heart

What it is: the old walled city with its ochre ramparts. Riads, souks, Jemaa el-Fna, Koutoubia mosque.

Pros:

• Total immersion, one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
• Restaurants and sites on foot.
• Many gorgeous riads (Riad Yasmine, Riad Jardin Secret, etc.).

Cons:

• Noise: motorbikes, calls to prayer, souks until late. Poor sleep for many.
• Heat: riads without proper AC become unbearable in summer.
• Luggage access: the Medina is pedestrian. You'll wheel 5-15 min through alleys.
• Heating: most riads don't heat properly in winter.
• WiFi: often weak in old buildings.

Avg price: €60-200/night depending on tier.

Best for: 2-3 nights for a first experience. Beyond that, most travellers need to breathe.

Guéliz — the modern district

What it is: the European quarter built by the French in the 1920s. Wide streets, boutiques, international cafés.

Pros:

• Easy to live in: sidewalks, taxis, shops.
• Many great restaurants (Al Fassia, La Trattoria, Amal).
• WiFi and AC generally decent.
• Close to everything: 10 min taxi to Medina, 5 min to Semlalia.

Cons:

• Loss of authenticity: could be any Mediterranean city.
• Traffic noise, especially around avenue Mohammed V.
• Many standardized soulless Airbnb apartments.
• Airbnb prices pushed up by demand.

Semlalia — the residential neighborhood we love

What it is: a quiet residential neighborhood north of Guéliz. Low-rise 1980s buildings, Moroccan families, neighborhood bakeries, corner shops.

Pros:

• Genuinely quiet: residential streets, no tourist traffic.
• Central: 5 min drive from Guéliz, 15 min from the Medina, 12 min from Majorelle.
• Prices well below Guéliz or Medina for the same comfort.
• Local feel — you cross neighbors coming home with their daily bread.
• Fiber wifi and proper AC available in modern rentals.
• Stress-free street parking.

Cons:

• You need a taxi (petit taxi, 15-25 DH) to the Medina. No walkable charm immediately.
• Fewer tourist restaurants in the neighborhood (but Carrefour Market is a 9 min walk).
• No architectural "wow" — it's regular Marrakchi life.

Avg price: €45-90/night direct for a full apartment.

Best for: pretty much anyone not chasing constant folklore. Our pick for 4+ nights, couples who like to cook one evening, nomads, families.

• High-end restaurants.
• Safety and calm (inside compounds).

Cons:

• Total tourist bubble. Could be anywhere.
• Expensive: few real 5* under €200/night.
• No Moroccan soul.

Avg price: €200-800/night.

Best for: luxury, business, high-end honeymoons.

Palmeraie — back to nature

What it is: historic palm grove northeast of the city, 15-25 min from centre. Villas with pools, hotel-clubs, resorts.

Pros:

• Big private villas with pool, garden, absolute calm.
• Ideal for large families or friend groups.
• Nature, palm trees, total evening silence.

Cons:

• Requires a car: hard to live without, taxis expensive and unreliable.
• Little local walkable life.
• Isolated from urban life.
